Should You Use the Universal College App or the Common App SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips For years, the Common Application (CA) was the only widely available application for use at multiple colleges. It was created in 1975, with 15 colleges in its first year. It still dominates the college application world, and today is used by more than 800 colleges and universities. However, back in 2007, the Universal College Application (UCA) was created, and now serves 18 colleges and universities. So what exactly are the differences between the CA and the UCA? Why do colleges use one, both, or neither? And which one should you use? We will explore these questions in this post and help you decide how to apply. CA vs UCA: A Centralized College Application Both the CA and UCAallow you to create a centralized college application- with your demographic information, extracurricular activities, and grades- and then send that application off to various colleges. This saves time since you don't have to fill out a separate application for every single college you apply to. The CA and UCAmostly serve private colleges,though there are exceptions. The reason for this is that most public universities have their own online admissions systems. Many colleges on the CA and UCA have what they call "supplements"- extra questions that their admissions offices use to evaluate candidates. The supplements can include anything from short questions ("describe yourself in five words") to additional essays. If colleges accept both applications, they donââ¬â¢t have a preference for one or the other. In other words, it wonââ¬â¢t matter to them which one you use. While itââ¬â¢s far more likely youââ¬â¢ll use the CA simply because it serves so many more colleges, there are still some advantages to the UCA. So how do you decide which application system to use? Benefits of the Universal College Application First, let's take a look at the biggest pros of using the UCA: The Universal College App's interface is faster than the Common App's, and includes an auto-save feature, which can prevent you from losing progress and having to go back and fill something out again. Since the Universal App is newer and doesnââ¬â¢t serve as many applicants or colleges, you can expect to get technical assistance faster if you need it. Whether you run into a technical problem or have a question, you can expect a faster response from the UCA. You can edit your essay after you push the submit button with the UCA. Obviously, this wonââ¬â¢t matter if you edit your essay in March, as the admissions officers will have seen it by then, but if you catch a small mistake a few days after submission, youââ¬â¢ll have the chance to change it. You can link to online content youââ¬â¢ve produced,such as a student newspaper or film project. Some schools are on the UCA but not the CA. These are the University of Charleston (WV) and Landmark College(all other UCA schools are also on the CA). Note that bothLandmark College and the University of Charleston will be available on the CAstarting this application cycle(2019-20). Drawbacks to the Universal College Application Now that we've seen the pros of the UCA, let's go over the biggest cons: The main downside to the Universal College Appis that not very many schools use it in comparison to the CA.True- it doesserve some big-name schools like Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Princeton. But the rest of the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, and numerous other colleges arenââ¬â¢t on the UCA. For a complete list of schools, go to the UCA website. In most cases, if a college uses the Universal App, itââ¬â¢s also on the CommonApp, but not vice versa (except for the two exceptions we noted above). So for the majority of students, the Common Appis likely to be the more convenient option since it will give them the most flexibility when applying to college. Itââ¬â¢s possible that if you decide to use the UCA but then decide after submitting some applications that you want to apply to a school that only uses the CA, youââ¬â¢ll end up having to fill out the CA anyway. If you start with the CA, itââ¬â¢s much less likely youââ¬â¢ll have to fill out a second application since so few schools are UCA-only. Benefits of the Common Application We've looked at the pros and cons of the UCA, but what about the CA? Here are the three biggest advantages: The biggest draw of the Common Appis that it represents more than 800schools! Because of this fact alone, many students use the CA even if they would prefer theUCA's interface and flexibility. Check out the Common App website to see the full list of schools it serves. Since the CA has been around for a long time, most high school teachers and guidance counselors are familiar with the CA and know how to fill out its various sections (including letters of recommendation and the counselor recommendation sections). With theCommon App account rollover feature, you can actually start your application early and roll the information you've filled out over to the next year's application when it opens on August 1. Drawbacks to the Common Application Just like the UCA, the Common App isn't perfect! Here are its biggest cons: The CA has a slower interface than UCA. The Common App launched a new version in 2014. Some students have found this format a bit confusing. For example, academic honors and extracurriculars are now filled out in subsections that are somewhat hard to find (the honors list is in the "Education" section, and the activities subsection is under "Activities"). These used to be more straightforward lists. Itââ¬â¢s harder to retain certain formatting in essays since the "upload"feature is gone with the most recent edition. If youââ¬â¢re picky about how your essay is formatted, this could be a source of annoyance. The Common Appreceives thousands upon thousands of applications. For example, in2017-18, more than 1 million applicants used the CA. However, their staff isnââ¬â¢t that big, so if you have a technical problem, it might take some time to work it out. Definitely aim to submit your applications before their deadlines in case you run into any technical troubles. (And donââ¬â¢t be that student pressing the submit button at the last possible minute!) Unlike the Universal College App, you canââ¬â¢t make edits to the essay after submission. So donââ¬â¢t push "submit" until you are positive your essay is perfect! Colleges That Donââ¬â¢t Accept Eitherthe UCA or CA While the CA and UCA have become huge names in college admissions, there are still plenty of schools that donââ¬â¢t accept either application system. If you are applying to these schools, you might not even have to choose between the UCA and CA. Here are some notable schools that donââ¬â¢t use either the Universal College App or Common App: Georgetown University MIT Rutgers University University of California system (including UC Berkeley and UCLA) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign University of Texas system (including UT Austin) Texas AM This is just a starter list. As a general rule, public universities tend to have their own systems. And some colleges on the CA and UCA also offer their own online application systems. To check whether a school is on the UCA or CA, simply go to the list of UCA schools and CA schools, and see if the school is on the list (use a ctrl + F to search quickly on the UCA or just use the search function for the CA). If youââ¬â¢re mostly applying to schools that donââ¬â¢t use the UCA or CA, for the few colleges you apply to that do use those applications, you might have a bit more flexibility. For example, say youââ¬â¢re a California resident applying mostly to public in-state schools, but youââ¬â¢re also applying to Harvard, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins as your reach schools. Since all three of those schools are on both the UCA and CA, you would be able to choose between the two applications based on your preferences. However, if your reach schools were Stanford and Yale, you would have to use the Common App, since neither of those schools uses the Universal College App. Bottom Line: Universal College Application vs Common App Given these pros and cons, which application system is the best choice for you- the Universal College Application or the Common Application? Definitely Use the Common Application If â⬠¦ You are applying to schools that donââ¬â¢t accept the Universal College App and/or schools that are Common App only. This will likely be the case for the majority of students. Most or all of the schools youââ¬â¢re applying to require at least one letter of recommendation and essay. Since these features are required on the CA, it will simplify your application process to have them as required, rather than optional, components. Definitely Use the Universal College Application If â⬠¦ Youââ¬â¢re only applying to schools that accept the Universal College App (or some schools that take the UCA and some schools that donââ¬â¢t accept either the UCA or the CA) and you prefer the UCAââ¬â¢s interface. Final Tip For any school that you are interested in applying to, look it up on both the CA website and UCA website and note if itââ¬â¢s on the CA, the UCA, both, or neither. Children and pregnant women are most at risk. Her 2003 study found that 89 percent of the participating patients chosen because of their fish-heavy diets had high mercury levels. Many had levels as much as four times that which the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe. However, British scientists argue against it, last month they found pregnant women who ate the most fish had children who were more advanced, with higher IQs and better physical abilities. All types of mercury, whether they are organic or in-organic can cause kidney damage if sufficient amounts enter the body. If the harm caused by the mercury is not too great, the kidneys are likely to recover once the body clears itself of the contamination. In addition to effects on the kidneys, inorganic mercury can damage the stomach and intestines, producing symptoms of nausea, diarrhea, or rigorous ulcers if swallowed in large amounts. Effects on the heart have also been observed in children after they accidentally swallowed mercury. Symptoms included rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure. There is little information on the effects in humans from long-term, low-level exposure to mercury. Franz Kafka was different, a man bent on portraying changes everywhere. Kafka was also a man consumed by death, consumed by the fact that he might eventually die. One man who was greatly affected by his fathers negligence of him, and a social deviance about him which held him back from interaction. Such a man was so afraid about what society thought of his writing, that he never widely published his works, and even asked a friend to burn all manuscripts. Not only was Kafka Jewish, he resented this fact. Once Kafka even stated that “Sometimes I’d like to stuff all Jews (myself included) into a drawer of a laundry basket-then open it to see if they’ve suffocated.'; As anyone can see, Kafka was enormously enticed by death, and the fact that he greatly disliked his own cultural status, and even his family. Even though, this man was one accompanied by great wisdom, which was shown in the writing of Metamorphosis. Kafka was a political genius who showed all his political beliefs through his one great work, Metamorphosis. All of the experiences in Kafka’s life are portrayed through Gregor, a person who wished he was dead at the end of Kafka’s words. Distant from the poor, meager, and mostly un-vivacious reality of life and it’s hardships stands one man, Gregor, a provider of financial resources for his family. Such a young man is making his way in society, and the world in general. Through Gregor’s successes, and his almost workaholic attitude, he has suffered into prospering. Prosperity is an awkward word, for it is one which not only describes a persons wealth, though also his downfalls. The great undoing of prosperity shows itself in Gregor as he becomes a monster, one created by Anti-Marxist society. Since Gregor’s is a society which eventually shuns him, and his great mind for one fact. A fact that I wish to prove, through gazing at the society created in Kafka’s mind. However, a fact that has worth in studying because of it’s multi-faceted grooves and perceptions of society. In taking a glance at Kafka’s complex society, one must also see his society as an extension of Gregor. A person must first look at the meaning of Gregor’s name in German, and its derivation into English. The name Gregor is closely associated to “Gregariously';, which refers to a sociable and jovial mindset.

Relationships in Margaret Laurenceââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅThe Stone Angelââ¬Â Essay
In Margaret Laurenceââ¬â¢s novel, The Stone Angel, Hagar Shipley experiences many different relationships. The key relationships in her life are all with men; her respectful but cold relationship with her father, her impersonal relationship with her husband Bram Shipley, her one-sided, protective relationship with John, and her distant but ultimately redeemed relationship with Marvin are each important aspects of her life. Hagarââ¬â¢s first key relationship is with her father, Jason Currie. This relationship has its basis in mutual respect. Hagar has tremendous respect for her father as a child; she admires his ability to make his own life as a successful storeowner by rising above his initial state of poverty and going from nothing to something. She admires this ability because it shows a sense of perseverance and determination that she herself values. Additionally, it is crucial to her respect that he achieves his standing in life through his strong-will; he made it in life by being strong and forceful rather than by putting his emphasis on emotions. This strong-willed personality and unwillingness to show a form of weakness through emotions ââ¬â forms of pride ââ¬â become cornerstones of Hagarââ¬â¢s own character. Indeed, the key factor in the relationship between Hagar and her father is that they have a similar personality. Both insist on proving their strength and pride, stopping eit her of them from being able to connect to the other on an emotional level. This pride is evident in her fatherââ¬â¢s punishment of her when she tells a customer that there are bugs in his store as a child; he clearly takes great pride in his work. Hagar too is proud, to the point of resisting her need to cry when her father hits her. She gains his resolve to put forth the image of strength at all times and to mask her vulnerability with pride. This form of strength leads Jason to carry respect for Hagar as well. She wants to please him, yet this similarity in their personalities is the very thing that destroys their relationship. They are constantly at odds with one another because she has in many ways turned herself into him, and the character trait of stubbornness is one that can be particularly hindering when neither side is willing to give in to the other. He wishes to control Hagarââ¬â¢s life, and as both are stubborn and independent, he cannot possibly succeed and ultimately does not. His attempts to control her life by determining whom she will date only strengthen Hagarââ¬â¢s need to rebel and toà prove herself, which leads to the final crack in their relationship: her choice to marry Bram ââ¬â the person her father least approves of. This act of rebellion shows her need to prove her independence to her father, and her reaction to his insistence that she will not marry Bram only strengthens her belief that she must do so. When she does leave with him, the relationship between father and daughter effectively ends, as neither side contacts the other. When Jason dies, he does not even leave the store to her. Despite their lack of communication, Hagar still respects her father. This respect is evident in that she is deeply offended when Bram urinates on the steps to her fatherââ¬â¢s store. It is perhaps most apparent in her narration; years after losing contact with him, she still holds him in esteem and sees him as a model for her own life. Nevertheless, the relationship is a failure because neither Jason nor Hagar is willing to allow his emotions to take precedence over his pride. Clearly, their similarities are such that their relationship is unable to succeed unless one is willing to give in to the other ââ¬â an art that neither Hagar nor Jason is particularly proficient in. After Hagar leaves her childhood behind she goes to finishing school and her return to Manawaka allows her to meet Brampton Shipley. Her impersonal, bickering and sexual relationship with Bram, although ultimately a failure, is a key one in her life. At first, Hagar is attracted to Bramââ¬â¢s physical appearance as well as his personality ââ¬â which sharply contrasts her own. Hagar is also initially attracted to his lack of expression of true emotion. Bram is tall, dark and handsome, but also reveals a gruff and wild personality, which allows him to do and say what he wants without being mindful how society judges him. However, Hagar is quite mindful of social status, which makes her more conservative and more polite than Bram. Although these opposing personalities ultimately attract them to each other, they become the main part of the wedge that drives them apart. Another part of this wedge between Hagar and Bram is Hagarââ¬â¢s refusal to open up to him and display her lov e of him or even of their sex life. Some of Hagarââ¬â¢s refusal to open up stems from her fear of being hurt if she does, and some of it stems from the circumstances under which she and Bram were married. Like Hagar, her father was also a socially conscience man and he refused to let his daughter marry a common farmer. Part of Hagar agreed to marry Bramà simply to spite her father. All of these circumstances lead to a change in Hagarââ¬â¢s relationship with Bram. Hagar grows tired of the uncouth family dinners, of watching Bram blow his nose with his fingers, and of watching him subject their children to the same wild manner. When their opposing personalities stop being attractive to one another and it becomes clear that it is an emotionless and unhappy relationship, she takes her son John and leaves him. He does not even try to stop her. Such an impersonal parting indicates that the relationship ended in failure and Hagar is ultimately responsible for this failure. She is the one that refuses to share emotion with him, she is the one who is overly critical of him, and she is the one who leaves him. Bramââ¬â¢s only responsibility in the failure of their relationship is that he does not change and eventually gives up. Hagarââ¬â¢s s one-sided relationship with John is the only one in which she shows love. Hagar unquestionably loves John, and offers herself emotionally to him alone. She pours everything into John, leaving little love for anyone else in her life. John does not appreciate his motherââ¬â¢s love as much as he perhaps should, and he is frustrated by her nagging more than he is appreciative of her love. Despite this lack of appreciation, Hagar continues to direct all of her energy into raising John. She is quite controlling, and attempts to run every part of his life ââ¬â a remnant of her own relationship with her father. Hagarââ¬â¢s constant badgering and nagging drive John away from her as her fatherââ¬â¢s own domineering nature drove her away. Although at first John appreciates her love, the relationship changes as he wishes to grow independent of her and begins to resent her. She still cannot let go ââ¬â trying to control his relationship with Arlene to no avail. The ultimate fate of this relationship is a failure. In spite of his mother, John goes drinking and takes up a dare to cross an old train bridge in his truck. An unexpected freight train crashed into his truck and he dies shortly after with his mother by his side in the hospital. Johnââ¬â¢s death marks the abrupt end of their relationship; nothing can be done on Hagarââ¬â¢s part to reconcile with him. Johnââ¬â¢s rejection of his motherââ¬â¢s love changes her more than he knows. Since she has put everything into her love of him and he has died a vain death in spite of her, Hagar becomes the stone angel herself ââ¬â emotionally blind and unfeeling, and unwilling to subject herself to theà pain that love brings again. The blame for the failure of this relationship can be placed on both parties: Hagar for placing unreasonably high expectations on John and overly controlling him, and John for rejecting that love and betraying the care she has placed in him in order to es cape her love and be an individual. Hagarââ¬â¢s relationship with Marvin is both greatly in contrast to her relationship with John and largely the result of its failure. Where her relationship with John was intimate, her relationship with Marvin is distant. Where she was openly loving and nurturing to John, she is closed off and sharply critical of Marvin. Like her relationship with John, Hagarââ¬â¢s relationship with Marvin is one-sided for the most part, but Marvin shows emotion for Hagar in this case, and not vice versa. This different treatment of Marvin can be partly attributed to the circumstances surrounding her relationship with John. Hagar has always favored John because he reminds her more of her father ââ¬â whom she respects ââ¬â than Marvin did. Indeed, Marvinââ¬â¢s wit, perceived by her to be slow was more like that of Bram. Hagar places so much of her emotions and love into John that it is unsurprising that Marvin is always found wanting in her eyes by comparison. When he tries to impress her by cleaning the house, she criticizes him rather than appreciating him as she might have if it were John. When he prepares to go off to war, Hagar misses another key moment to connect with Marvin. She might not see him again and wants to warn him, to comfort him and to express her feelings toward him, but she cannot; she is afraid to reveal her emotions. He wishes to express his feelings, but is also unable to do so because of his timidity. Indeed, the path their relationship takes is determined as much, if not more, by personalities than it is by circumstances. Hagarââ¬â¢s personality is such that she takes great pride in strength and resourcefulness ââ¬â qualities she finds Marvin to lack. Her inability to express herself emotionally is both a key part of her personality and the driving force behind her many wasted opportunities with Marvin ââ¬â who needs the very level of acceptance from Hagar that she cannot provide. Despite this failure in the relationship early on, however, Hagarââ¬â¢s epiphany before dying changes the course of it and determines its ultimate success or failure. Realizing that she has never simply rejoiced and accepted the loveà she has been surrounded with, she gives Marvin the acceptance he has always needed by telling him that he has been a better son to her than John has. The early failure of their relationship can be attributed exclusively to Hagar; she has the wrong expectations of him and sinks so much love into her ultimately failed relationship with John that she neglects Marvin. In the end though, Hagar is also responsible for the relative success or at least redemption of their relationship. Her choice to make their last moments together worthwhile rather than another wasted opportunity make her relationship with Marvin the most ultimately successful one in her life. In the end, Hagarââ¬â¢s key relationships vary greatly; some are defined by respect and others are defined by a lack of emotion of any kind. Others still find their basis in too much or too little love. Ultimately, Hagarââ¬â¢s achievement of self-realization before her death leads her to redeem at least one of the key relationships in her life ââ¬â redeeming herself in the process.

This is why Iago, to get his just rewards uses him as a scapegoat. Iago told Roderigo, O,sir, content you. I follow him [Othello] to serve my turn upon him (I, i lines 38-9). Iago is saying, he only follows Othello to a point, and upon reaching it he will not follow him any longer. Iago has opened my eyes to see the real meaning of deceit. No matter what, Iago will try to take advantage of Othello any time and he will be easily lead to believe the lies of Iago. The Moor, as many Venetians call him, is of strong character. He is very proud and in control of every move throughout the play. The control is not only of power but of the sense of his being who he is, a great warrior. In Act I, Othello has a scuffle with Brabantio, who has come to kill him, but before anything could happen Othello said, Hold your hands, both of you of my inclining and the rest. Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it without a prompter (I, ii, lines 80-3). The power shown here is quite astounding. The nature of Othellos character is of a dark man. A dark man, not only because he is black, but also because his whole person is very mysterious. He is mysterious in that he believes there is magic brewing everywhere. With this dark side he is also very outgoing, and not very bright. He isnt observant and the schemes of Iago work well on him. Though he doesnt reflect too much on his past, except occasional ventures of wars fought, he does let his emotions run his life. For all the dangers and encounters he has been involved in, this man is still naive of the corruptness of other individuals. Othello has a trusting nature in which he gives it all. He put all his trust in Iago during times of war and during Othellos marriage to Desdemona. This wasnt very bright of Othello, even if he wasnt trusting or more corrupt he still wouldnt realize Iago was lying. Everyone considered Iago as honest, and would be out of character for Othello to believe any different. For example, Othello had told the Duke, So please your grace, my ancient; A man he is of honesty and trust. To his conveyance I assign my wife, With what else needful your good grace shall think, To be sent after me (I, iii, lines 284-8). The control over any situation is one Othellos strong characteristics. Through the whole first act you can picture a man so much power and natural leadership and when he changes you cannot believe it. For example, when Lodovico had witnessed Othello hit Desdemona, he said: Is this the noble Moor whom our full Senate Call all in all sufficient? Is this the nature Whom passion could not shake? whose solid virtue The shot of accident nor dart of chance could neither graze nor pierce (IV, i, lines 264-8)? While Iago, being the honest man he is, answers: Hes that he is, I may not breathe my censure. What he might be (if, what he might, he is not) I would to heaven he were (IV, i, lines 270-2). Another place where Shakespeare shows Othello taking control over a situation is when Cassio and Montano are fighting after Roderigo antagonized him. These words Othello said are important now, but they will be more important later when he is alone with Desdemona in their bedroom. He will say: Now, by heaven, My blood begins my safer guides to rule, And passion, having my best judgement collied, Assays to lead the way. If I once stir Or do but lift this arm, the best of you Shall sink in my rebuke (II, iii, lines 203-8). You must feel sorrow for Othello because with all the power he has and the endless trust he gives, you try to reach out and show him the truth. These are sleeping time, class hours and personal time. I followed the schedule strictly for better comprehension. I left all other activities du ring study times and got confidence. Pre reading is the essence of good academic performance. I used to spend one hour in reading the subjects of next dayââ¬â¢s classes. Summaries and introductions of the topics are always helpful in understanding the complete topic. Internet should be used to find more information about the topic. Pre reading is also useful in revision of the same topic. Abraham Lincoln says and I quote, ââ¬Å"A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others.â⬠(Brainy Quote 2011). We read what has already been discussed and discovered but this adds to our knowledge and eventually enables us to gain academic success. I always find tables very useful for learning. I used to sub divide the topic into different categories. Making tables for those categories help in understanding different characteristics. Tables are also good for comparison between different topics. I always divided my daily time for different su bjects. Weekends must be given to those subjects that need more attention and preparation. It is always difficult to study one subject throughout the day. Breaks in-between the study hours should be used in different sort of sports and health activities. Progressively time can be adjusted for different subjects as the study progresses. Studying same thing for complete day is sometimes full of fatigue and boredom also. Therefore, the same subject should be planned for three days for 4 hours each day provided situation permits so. For me, group study is the best way of learning. This helps in learning from each otherââ¬â¢s knowledge. This is less boring and less stressful. Frequent questions can be asked from the group members and instant solutions can be found. Difficult topics should be tackled through group studies. Sharing of notes and ideas makes group study very interesting. Robert Quillen says, ââ¬Å"Discussion is a exchange of knowledgeâ⬠. Discussion is only there whe n we sit in groups to study due to which, there is fruitful exchange of knowledge that is helpful for all the students studying in groups.
